Re: Cat & mouse game
Ian handed Newt a napkin as soon as the other had finished speaking. "There", he said then, a bit clumsily. "You can get proper medication when we reach the base", he added immediately after. Because he still had all the intentions of doing his job, of course.

"...As if" Newt replied with a grin, as he started running away. AS IF he'd just walk kindly with him to the nearest marine base ! He was a free thief, not the dumbest prisonner-to be!

Re: Cat & mouse game
Ian looked at him running away. He groaned, looking up to the sky with a pained expression. Why, why was he damned with a nurse complex? He couldn't trust any, ANY of them. He started running after him.
And slowly, the loud sound of his steps on the road became that of hooves, and his breathing the angry pant of a bull.
Newt wasn't the only devil fruit user around.

Re: Cat & mouse game
Newt curiously glanced behind him, before he tried to run even faster. HOLY SHIT THAT WAS TERRIFYING, he thought to himself, as he jumped off the road, to land on the lower street...
Except there was no lower street, but the sea.
He let out a distressed yelp as he tried to catch himself back on a rock, and succeeded.
But there he was, now.
Sitting on a rock surrounded by sea water because he panicked like an idiot.

Re: Cat & mouse game
Ian managed to stop his run right on time not to get a bath that would have killed him. He morphed back with a huff, straightening his back. He crossed his arms on his chest, looking at Newt. "I would much like to leave you there, you know", he said with a grimace.
Unfortunately, he was very dedicated to his job.
Very unfortunately.

"Then don't feel forced to come down and fetch me," Newt replied to him, as he sticked his tongue out. He was feeling mostly furious at himself for falling like an idiot.

Re: Cat & mouse game
Ian shook his head. "I said you were going to get to the base, and there you will get, should that be the last thing I do", he said. Maybe a bit too much, but, heh. He was known to be passionate about his job. He carefully kneeled, extending an arm to Newt. "Do you think you can you manage to take my hand?"

Re: Cat & mouse game
Newt couldn't help a smirk at his attempt to get him. "You do realize that I could either pull you into the water and run away, or that I could just refuse your offer because, newsflash, I don't want to go to jail ?"

Re: Cat & mouse game
Ian looked at him straight in the eyes. ... it was true. The thought hadn't occured to him. But he shrugged, keeping his hand extended. "Suit yourself. I am not that much of a bastard as to leave a person in the middle of the sea. That's not my job." His other hand, however, tightened its hold on the ground.

Re: Cat & mouse game
Newt hesitated for a solid moment. Then he reached out for his hand. "What kind of person are you," he muttered under his breath, baffled.

Re: Cat & mouse game
Ian took his hand, and with a strong, iron-like grip, he yanked Newt back on the earth, as if it was the easiest thing in the world. "A nice person!", he answered with a sure nod, in all seriousness.

Re: Cat & mouse game
Newt was so surprised he met the ground with his nose first. Which broke. And he cursed as he tried to stop the sudden bloodloss this was causing. HAD HE EVER BEEN SO UNLUCKY OR WHAT ??

Re: Cat & mouse game
Ian almost panicked at the sight of all that blood so suddenly. "God, I am so sorry! So sorry- here, have my napkin..." He handed him his napkin once again, cursing himself for being that clumsy. "Listen, forget about the arrest. I should take you to a doctor." ... wow, had he really said THAT

Re: Cat & mouse game
Ian rolled his eyes. "Is basic human decency so rare among you criminals? ... wait, I just answered myself." He stood up, gently lifting Newt up to his feet. "There. Try to trust me a bit. Even if I already have scratched you palms, and broke your nose... maybe in fact you should run away", he half-joked.

Newt held back a soft laugh, and stood up with his help. "Maybe. In which direction should I run to get to a hospital ?"

Re: Cat & mouse game
Ian smiled a bit, relieved to see that the other man was not overly angry at him. "Well, it is in that direction", he said, pointing towards his left side. "But I guess running would make the blood loss worse. I'll get you there, if you'll allow me?"

"Well, depends. Do you try on hurting me more by the time we get there?" Newt replied as a joke, as he started walking slowly with him.

Re: Cat & mouse game
"My God I hope not!" Ian sounded genuinely upset at the thought. Then he smiled sheepishly when he got the joke. "Well, I'll do my best not to", he conceded while walking side by side with Newt.
Incredible how the situation had evolved.

"So. How long've you been with the marines?" Newt asked him after a little while, to try and break the ice between them.

Re: Cat & mouse game
Ian smiled at the other man. "I enrolled three years ago. You could say I am almost new." He tilted his head. "What about you? Have you always been a thief or have you been actually an honest citizen at some point of your life?", he asked with a smile, making a sign for him to turn at his right.

Re: Cat & mouse game
Newt followed the path, as he started to tilt his head backwards to hold most of the blood back in. "Oh yeah, I've been a good citizen when I was like what, eight years old, and my dad told me "sorry kid, couldn't bring bread home today.""

Re: Cat & mouse game
Ian felt a pang of guilt, as well as a rush of blood going straight to his cheeks. He felt a bit ashamed of himself. Not everyone had the luck of growing in a farm that always ran well, and never made him suffer hunger. "I'm sorry", he said with a frown. "It was rude to assume you did it just on a whim."

Re: Cat & mouse game
Newt smiled back at him. "Eh, don't worry. I probably steal more than what I really need. I'm rotten to the core now." Indeed, judging by his looks, he probably stole a great amount of money to pay for the extravagant clothes he was now wearing.

Re: Cat & mouse game
Ian let out a small laugh. "Rotten to the core? Aw now, that's too harsh. I am sure that under all that leather and smirks, there is quite a decent guy", he answered him, smiling. They finally reached the hospital - that was really not that big of a structure. "A decent guy whose I don't know the name of", he reminded himself.
