Charon held back a smile, and gently wrapped an arm around Hermes' shoulders, pulling him in, so as to let him now it was fine, that he wasn't mad.
Alecto really had a temper, and he suspected that Hypnos surely wouldn't have helped. He had been trying to get her to snap all too often recently, come to think of it. Maybe he'd look into this.

For now, as they walked towards Zagreus and Thanatos, he finally relaxed for a bit.

"Congratulations, Meg," Zagreus told his beloved with a wide grin. "I don't think there's anyone out that that can handle a crisis as quickly as you did!"

Hermes smiled up at Charon, leaning into his touch without thinking too much about it. Not even for the sake of the farse - he just genuinely enjoyed that the other man would silently assure him that everything was fine this way. "To my defense, it was all very funny until she threw that glass. But maybe it will be better if next time I'll have you as my backup rather than your brother", he whispered again with a conspiratory tone.

"Just thought I'd split the time-ticking bomb a little bit." Meg held back a little smile when Zagreus complimented her. "It's my job - and it's my sister. I'd be upset if I wasn't any good at it by now", she observed.

"Still. An impeccable job, nonetheless", Thanatos, the formal-looking man at Zagreus' side replied. His voice was low and calm, but he still exuded the same respect and waryness-inducing aura as Charon. Maybe just slightly less, but that might have to do with the fact that he was shorter than his older brother.
He looked at Hermes with a somewhat curious expression, before signing a greeting to Charon.

Charon held back at smile at Hermes' remark, but he kept a somewhat neutral expression as soon as they had joined his other brother.

Zagreus just had the time to wink at Meg after Thanatos' remark, when Charon signed back to his brother, to greet all of them, and congratulate them on their engagement. Then, he glanced at Hermes, and smiled to himself. "I would like to introduce you to my partner, Hermes."

"Wait- Partner, as it-" Zagreus was slightly confused, and looked at both Megaera and Than, looking for a clue.

Megaera crossed her arms as he amusedly looked over Charon and Hermes, who had finally gotten back his usual friendly grin. "Yes, now that I think about it, Alecto did say something about a boyfriend. In her usual friendly terms, of course. So it's true, then - I thought she was just trying to be funny." Not literally. Alecto was never funny - she only was moderately funny when she decided to be sarcastic.

"Yeah, I guess 'partner' is a little bit ambiguous isn't it", Hermes intervened with a smile. "And I believe her words of choice were the freak's boyfriend. Guess I've found a new friend!" He straightened up a little. "My congratulations to the three of you, by the way. Nice party! And even nicer occasion, right?"

Thanatos - usually quite unreadable, just like the majority of his family - managed for once to look flabbergasted. "Your boyfriend", he repeated, almost chuckling. "Well. You'll have to forgive me, Charon - when mother told me you'd be bringing someone with you, I didn't think..." He paused. "I have to admit you know how to keep your secrets." It wasn't a reproach - it sounded oddly affectionate.

"Well, thank you!" Zagreus answered Hermes with a bright smile. He got the feeling he might get along with him, and he was happy for Charon. Two good news it was, then! "I'm Zagreus- call me Zag. And in case no one introduced you yet, here are my two fiancés - Megaera, and Thanatos. I'm the glue holding them together, of course!" That was most definitely a joke, judging by his mischievous grin.

"Our relationship is quite recent," Charon half lied to his brother - well, he had a kind of relationship with Hermes by now. Not a romantic relationship, but. I digress.
"I only really had to keep it a secret from Hypnos. He's known Hermes for 20 minutes and already managed to get him into trouble."

Megaera scoffed, rolling her eyes a little - even though it was quite clear that she was more amused than bothered by Zagreus' comment. "Whether we like it or not", she added, throwing a smirk at Zagreus. "I'd say it's more of a Stockholm syndrome situation." She didn't say he was wrong, though. It was true that it had been his idea to seek her out for her 'special services' for couples when his relationship with Thanatos had started to evolve more and more.
She had tried to keep it as business-like as she could, of course. 'Tried' being the keyword, seeing as Zagreus was terribly good at worming his way into people's hearts. She and Thanatos had bonded over their mutual love for him at first, and had ended up falling in love with each other as well. Fun how life goes sometimes.

Hermes laughed. He was glad that Meg seemed to have more sense of humor than her sister. "Aw. I've got to admit that Stockholm syndrome sounds less cute than being the glue of a relationship, but let's say I'll believe in a middle way between the two things", he commented with a grin. "How did you guys get to know each other? Honestly it's not everyday that I see a trouple so well adjusted!" To his credit, Charon had been very vague about it. Maybe he didn't know all the details himself.

Thanatos hummed. "I see", he signed back. He held back a smile when he heard the discussion Meg and Zag were having about his role in their relationship, and shook his head before signing again, "Well - surely it's for the best that nothing actually happened. Hypnos is having a little too much fun trying to make Alecto explode like a powder keg lately." He regarded his brother with an amused glance. "I'm not so sure your boyfriend is completely innocent, though. Didn't know you would fall for a troublemaker." Said he, hypocrytically, while standing right at the side of one of the biggest troublemakers the world had ever seen.

"Ah!" Zagreus exclaimed, both thrilled and a little uneasy for being asked that question. "Well. Tricky question. Let's say we lacked of balance when I tried to date one or the other. At first it was more like an open relationship we had agreed to- and then they bonded over complaining about me." He grinned at Meg. He'd rather not get too deep into details about the reasons they got together for good, but- yeah, that was a decent summary.

Charon held back a smile at Than's remark. "I suppose it runs into the family", he teased him back. It was far from false - their father had been a troublemaker himself, with a character really close to Hypnos. A lazy, happy gremlin, who had ended up in custody by accident quite a number of times.

Meg shot a little smile back at Zagreus. "Couldn't have explained it better myself", she commented, wrapping an arm around Zagreus' shoulders, pulling him closer to her in an affectionate gesture. "There's just so much to complain about that we decided to marry him." Somewhere at the opposite side of the room, Alecto was probably gagging in disgust.
Meg turned back towards Hermes. "What about you? How did you and Charon meet? He's so focused on his job he barely even registers there are other human beings around him, let alone someone to date."

Hermes just nodded along as Zagreus answered him, and held back a smile. Well- what could he say. It was cute. And functional! Which was kind of rare, let's be honest. He chuckled when his question was asked right back to him. "I've noticed that. One of these days I am going to go shut down Wall Street myself, since apparently that's my major competitor for his attention. He's lucky I like to take first steps", he added with a little wink before proceeding with retelling the made-up story of their first meeting (without the made-up spicy details, this time).

Thanatos smirked. "I suppose", he repeated in answer. He stopped briefly to listen at Hermes since he was also interested in knowing how his shut-in brother had met with someone who seemed so energetic and all over the place. He snorted, because the idea of a stranger just boldly asking for a drink and a date instead of just taking his doubled tip was honestly funny. He looked at his brother again, raising an eyebrow at him. "And you just said yes, sure, of course?", he asked amusedly.

Zagreus let out an incredulous chuckle once Hermes was done with that story. "I don't know what amazes me the most: the fact that Charon was reasonable for once and decided not to skip dinner, the fact that he ordered himself a pizza, or the fact that you actually delivered said pizza by foot! You must have been exhausted when you had to go back to your workplace!"

Charon looked back at Than, and scoffed. "Look at him. A handsome man asked me out after running to my apartment by foot. How could you expect me to refuse such an offer." Granted, one of the reasons why he had contacted Hermes in the firdt place was because of how appealing he had found him.

Megaera seemed just as incredulous and amused as her two boyfriends, to be honest. As said, Charon was well known to be quite unapproachable.

Hermes laughed. "You can be amazed by all three things", he answered with a wink. "Well, I sure wasn't rested, but I wouldn't say I was exhausted. I just took it a little easier when I had to get back, since I wasn't on a timed race. I took my sweet time, taking that drink at his place." He grinned. "Plus, I had a date to look forward to for the next morning. Guess that helped making me feel less tired." He threw a coy glance at Charon, intercepting the sign for 'handsome' in clear reference to him among others he wasn't able to distinguish. "Aw, Boss, complimenting me while I don't look? That's unfair!", he protested with a smug smile.

Thanatos shrugged, unable to hide a little smile. "I wouldn't know. If I had been in your place, and Zag had been the one asking me out, I wouldn't have even managed to answer. Even though knowing him, I would've ended saying yes. But I'm glad - you seem to be happy." He let out a startled chuckle when Hermes teased Charon about calling him handsome.

Zagreus chuckled and grinned. 'Boss'! Now that was a term of endearement that seemed to fit Charon quite well.
And although he was much less used than Than to read sign language, he agreed unknowingly with his boyfriend. Charon was smitten and happy, that was for sure. He just had to witness the look he gave Hermes when he had apparently caught him talking about his looks to realize it.

Charon looked at Hermes with such fondness.

And he was the only fool unaware of how blatant his crush was.
"There's nothing fair or unfair about that. And if I am to shower you in compliments for your entertainment, I won't do so in public. Or Alecto will have a seizure."

Megaera, who was quite good at reading people, had to hold back a smile - because if Charon was clearly as fond of Hermes as it was humanly possible, the same could be said for Hermes, who kept biting on his lip to keep his smile in check as he tried to hide his fondness for the other man behind an admittedly well-constructed wall of chit-chat, grins, little jabs and jokes.
They both probably thought they were doing a great job at being subdued and casual.

Maybe the fools in that situation were two.

Hermes, on his side, was still unaware whether Charon's loving glances were all part of their farse (which would mean that the older man was honestly a missed actor, he should've gotten an Academy Award) or not - but damn him if he didn't love to be regarded like that by him. And he was well determined to enjoy it for as long as he could while being able to gaze at him in that exact same way without restraining himself too much.
Thankfully Charon had signed slowly at him, so he had managed to catch the general meaning of the sentence - that made him snort, and roll his eyes. "It's very unfair - I'd prefer to be aware when I'm being called handsome by another handsome man", he replied with a smirk. "But fine. I'll wait to get my shower of compliments after the party, then."

"It's probably a wise decision", Thanatos intervened, still fighting a smile at the familiarity and fondness he could see between his brother and Hermes. "Alecto can indeed already barely take me and Zagreus holding hands with her sister in her vicinity - and it's our engagement party. If she had to withstand more, I'm afraid one broken glass will be the last of our problems."

Zagreus couldn't hold back a laugh at Thanatos' comment. "Oh, yeah, and my father would scold me later for something I didn't even do!" He would. He totally, absolutely would.

Charon looked back at Hermes with fondness still, before he got caught up in a conversation with the trouple that had nothing to do with him and his new 'boyfriend'. They chatted for a while, and then it was time to allow them to greet more guests.

He spent most of his time by Hermes' side. And although he was not forced to do so in any way, he entertained his partner-in-crime with stories about this or that other guest at the party. Mostly through text - it was sometimes easier that way, given that Hermes wasn't completely at ease with his signing, especially since Charon was used to signing quite fast, when he wasn't paying attention.

The rest of the evening probably went without any other incident. Well. Although he had proved to be quite fun, if there ever was some music at some point, and couples dancing for funsies, Charon kindly let Hermes know that no, he didn't dance.
Or did he.

It was much easier to read Charon's texts rather than trying to decipher signing that was at times too fast, and at times too complicated for Hermes' beginner-level vocabulary.
It was probably also much easier to text than sign for Charon, seeing as Hermes was constantly at his arm. He wasn't forced to be - he could have been all over the place, chatting up more strangers and making new friends and charming someone with his brilliant smile -, he just really wanted to stay close to Charon. And he absolutely drank down all the stories he was told, and he laughed, gasped, and commented each and every single one of them. All in all, he had a lot of fun, and he just fell for his handsome associate harder and harder.

OH DID CHARON DANCE. DID HE
No matter how fond he was of Charon, though. If Hermes wanted to dance with someone, that someone better be ready to get on the dancefloor whether they liked it or not.
He gently but insistently (and joyfully) tried his hardest to coax his partner to follow him, pulling on his sleeve and excitedly dragging him in for a dance. Hopefully Charon would humor him, and even if he'd decide to just stand straight in the middle of the dancers, Hermes would have danced enough for two.
And if the song changed into a slower-paced one at some point, and they were to dance like a couple of awkward teenagers at their first prom, wobbling on place while being very close to each other, even better. Hermes had a soft spot for embarrassing situations. He'd smile sweetly up at Charon and guide his hands to rest on his hips as he put his own on his shoulders, so that they could look disgustingly in love for a little while.

He knew he was probably only preparing himself to be hurt a little more by the time this would all be over. He knew - but he didn't care. Maybe this wasn't as hopeless as he thought after all, who knew. And even if it was, he would have never denied himself a chance to stay as close as possible to this wonderful man before the evening would come to an end.
Nor to bother the hell out of Alecto in case she happened to look in their direction.

No joke, Charon had never really danced before. It just wasn't his thing, and on any other occasion, he'd have told off whoever thought they could drag him to the dancefloor.
And then there was Hermes, who got him to smile on his way there. He didn't dance, not. But he humored him by holding his hands from time to time, and in the end, it wasn't so bad. He even had a lot of fun watching his date dancing in front of him. When the music slowed down, he briefly debated with himself, wondering whether he should go for it or not. But he offered a hand to Hermes, and brought him close.
This, he felt comfortable doing. He lost himself in Hermes' eyes, and his smiles, and the whole world could go to hell. If all he had to do to be able to keep him close was to move his feet around slowly then he'd do it.
He briefly prayed to time itself to never stop that dance.

Glancing at him from afar, Nyx smiled to herself and had managed to shush down Hypnos before he could go pester his elder brother about the fact that omg, someone got him to dance.
And as far as Alecto was concerned? Well. Against all odds, Nyx offered her to dance with Hypnos himself to get a bit of a distraction.
Oh, the way he squirmed a little uncomfortably made up plenty for her frustration. Like hell she'd pass the opportunity to step on his feet!

Unfortunately for both of them, time didn't listen to any prayer. It passed away pleasantly but inexorably between a dance and a toast to the soon-to-be-married trouple.
At some point, guests had started to line up to congratulate Zagreus, Megaera and Thanatos one last time, light chatter filling the room instead of the music that had progressively died down as people gathered their belongings and rich-looking coats.

Hermes, although reluctanctly, had let go of Charon and contented himself with hanging at his arm as they went to bid goodbye to a few people. When the moment came to greet Chaos, suddenly the Cthonia's eldest member held up a hand in a silent request. "If I may speak with you for a moment, grandchild", they said to Charon, eyes fixed on him.
It was clear enough they meant 'alone', and Hermes let go of his partner's arm with an accomodating grin. "I'll go say goodbye to Hypnos", he said nonchalantly before waltzing away towards Charon's younger brother.
He'd probably hold his tongue a bit if Alecto was still around, but she had to expect at least one joke about how cute she looked as she danced with Hypnos.

Chaos kept on staring down at Charon for a little bit, unblinking and unnerving like only someone from their family could be. Then, they raised their hands. "Now, child. Where did you really find that funny little man? You may as well tell me, seeing as I humored you two for the evening. Please, respond. I am quite curious."

"Cute? HA!" Alecto actually laughed at Hermes's face, and flipped her hair over her shoulder. "Please, this was a complete disaster. But it was entertaining, at the very least. Wasn't it, Hypnos?"
Poor Hypnos laughed awkwardly. "Hahahaha yeah, can't feel my feet anymore! Those probably weren't the good shoes for a dance. I mean. Your shoes, not mine."
Alecto just laughed some more. No, not even a comment about how cute she was could take her good spirits away. She felt like she had gotten her revenge, at least over Hypnos.
She glared at Hermes soon after, however. "Now let's be clear, Orange. You better keep my café out of your date plans with Mr. Creeps from now on, or I'll make both of your lives a living hell. Are we clear."
You can't stop me now, the crackship is real :DDDDD

Charon was at loss for words for a few seconds, and then it hit him. Of course. Of course Chaos would see unnervingly right through him. They always had, and they always would. They knew him even better than his own mother.
He eventually sighed, and quickly looked around to make sure no one would read what he was about to sign. "A dating app. He agreed to accompany me for this evening. Nothing more." They hadn't agreed to anything more, no. Not yet.

Hermes threw a sympathetic look at Hypnos before his attention was taken by Alecto again. He burst into laughter - bravely managing to ignore the little unpleasant twist that seized his stomach when the first answer that flashed in his mind was 'That's very unlikely, we'll probably never see each other again!' - and made a scene of wiping a little tear from the corner of his eye before he regarded her with a smile that had nothing reassuring in it. "Oh, my dear Alecto! You're such a bunch of fun. Trying to threaten me like that! Hilarious", he added, thinking back of one certain brother of his that had been almost in prison something close to ten times by now, if he went by the latest news Dio had passed by him. "You'll learn something about me. And it's that the more you tell me not to do something, the more chances there are that I'll definitely do it." He winked at her.

I'm not stopping you I love it

Chaos hummed - whether in interest, amusement or simple aknowledgement, nobody would ever be able to know. "I see", he commented in the end. "I won't tell on you, if you're worried about it." Of course they wouldn't. They might enjoy a little mahyem around them, and some degree of mishappenings, but not inside the family. Besides they had probably been quite entertained by covering up for that lie and pretending to believe it.
They glanced towards Hermes, and then again their eyes were on Charon, once again unnervingly scrutinizing him. "A shame, nonetheless." Because they both had seemed very happy, and genuinely so.

Hermes had managed to get what he wished for: Alecto's smirk finally left her lips, to be replaced by a tense twitch of her upper lip. "Ugh. It's a wonder the creep even likes you, given how stuck-up he is."
"Actually," Hypnos intervened, "I can't let you say that!" He grinned at Alecto. "Hermes here is just like what Charon needed- someone to shake him up a little bit! I, on the contrary, think they fit perfectly well together!"
"...Whatever," Alecto spat with a disdainful glare, before she finally turned away and left, without so much as a goodbye for either of those two.

Charon should have felt relieved that Chaos wouldn't tell anyone on him. But all he felt was guilt, and regret. Not for having brought Hermes over - no, he would cherish the memories of this night.
"He deserves better than me," Charon eventually signed to Chaos. "I don't think our age difference would have worked on the long run." It probably wouldn't.
They again, he'd have done everything for it to work, if given the chance.

Hermes felt himself flush pleasantly when Hypnos observed that actually he made for a great match with Charon. he grinned at him. "He's much funnier than he's given credit for", he added with a smile, observing Alecto as she stiffly walked away. "Why are you so allergic to other people's happiness?", he asked out loud, just to further bother her. He knew he wouldn't have been deigned with an answer anyway. He did turn again to face Hypnos, thanking him for the evening - he had a lot of fun.

Chaos raised a thin, white brow at him. "I don't think this is only for you to decide or think about", they observed, as frank as only they could be. "But I won't be telling you how to live your life, my child. You're old enough to make your own choices." They paused. "And he could be an interesting choice, if you just decide to deviate from your usual path. Think about that." They nodded at Charon to bid him goodnight - it was clear that they were done talking, for now.

Indeed, Alecto didn't bother with replying to Hermes, and went on her way. Hypnos happily chatted with him for the time they had left.

Charon looked at Chaos with disbelief - yet with a little bit of hope. He eventually smiled and nodded at them in return, signing a final goodbye before he walked away, to go find Hermes again.

Once all goodbyes were done, he walked out with his date, and accompanied him to the passenger door of his car, which he opened - like the gentleman he was - before he sat behind the wheel.
Before he turned the engine on, he smiled at Hermes and grabbed his phone again. "You did wonderfully good tonight. I couldn't thank you enough." He then put it down and opened his GPS, to enter again the address of the place where he had picked him up earlier that day.

Hermes merrily bid goodbye at Hypnos when Charon came to fetch him, and he followed the other man outside and to the car.
On their way there, his right hand twitched with the instinct to go for his partner's, as he had freely done for the whole evening - but he just pocketed it, in the end, humming to distract himself. After all, who could really know if Charon would have wanted this kind of attention even now that they were relatively out of his family's scrutiny?
He threw him a smirk though and thanked him when he went as far as opening the door for him - such an old-styled mannerism, but it suited Charon so well.
He chuckled when he read the message that had just made his phone buzz in the pocket of his suit pants. "You did very well yourself, but no need to thank me, Boss, really!", he answered sincerely. "I had a lot of fun! You and your family - all the people you know, they sure are an interesting bunch."
He hadn't looked at his phone for the whole night. He had never wished to be somewhere else for a single second - or to be speaking with someone else. It really seldom happened. he had been often reproached because at family events he always ended up looking like a sulky teenager, sat in a corner with his phone and tapping away to all of his friends.

Charon hesitated. He hadn't started the engine yet when Hermes answered him, but- in the end he did it anyway, and merely signed a "Me too, I had fun."
He'd need the whole ride to debate whether or not he should talk to him him honestly, with Chaos' words echoing in his mind. This is not only for you to think about.
His gaze wandered towards Hermes during the ride, and he let out a soft smile.

When he parked the car in front of the building where he supposed Hermes lived, he took a deep breath in, and grabbed his phone again.
"Should you be open to the possibility of coming again, it would be a pleasure." There. It was still neutral enough for Hermes to dismiss the offer if he wished to, but he hoped it would let the other man know just how he had felt about having him at his side for the night.
He did not dare to look at him yet, and reached for his wallet instead, to pay him the amount they had agreed on.

Hermes was uncharacteristically silent for the whole trip back to his friend's apartment. it wasn't as if he had nothing to say, far from it - he was full of thoughts, as per his usual. Would this really be the last time he'd see Charon, or hear from him? Was this one evening all there could ever be between them? He caught the other man's smile, halfway through the ride, and he felt himself smile back at him.
No, he decided when they parked in front of his stop. This couldn't be it. And if he had to take the step forward into the void only to discover that this wish was one-sided, at least he wouldn't have regrets! He was just about to open his mouth when his phone vibrated with a new message.
And it was a message that made his heart leap.

Not one-sided, then?

He quickly turned to look at Charon, who was fumbling with his wallet, and he let go of his phone to stop him by grasping his hand. "Wait, Charon - wait, I..." He hesitated, but only for a split second. "Listen, I know we had an agreement and all, but I've... I've changed my mind about the payment."

Charon was startled for a moment, and just stared at Hermes at first. His heart had leaped in his chest at the thought that he wished to talk to him about his latest text, maybe... Yet he couldn't help but feel his heart clench at the thought he might bargain with him about the amount.

Which one would it be?

"Do you want more?" he signed, slowly, to make sure Hermes would be able to read it.
