Dean lifted up his hands. "Hey, you know me. Work, work, and work again 'til I drop dead. There is a case, but it is an excellent way to get some fun. We kind of need it", he insisted. It wasn't a lie. He needed to get out of that place, and to get something to distract himself with. Or he'd have gone crazy, thinking about the fact that his best friend was supposed to be his fricking soulmate.
Even if said best friend was going to stay there.

"Sooo we're getting the case done, and then," Sam particularly insisted on that word, "we'll go to Vegas. When are we leaving?"

Dean shrugged. "Tomorrow morning sounds good to you?", he asked, stuffing his mouth with pie.

"Seems good to me," Sam replied.

- -

Once they were done with their case - which had consisted in a lot of exhausting chases in the woods -, Dean finally got what he wanted: Vegas.
Sam didn't actually mind to go there, he too could use nice drinks, a bit of gambling, and then locking himself up in his room to read if he didn't find distraction in the meantime.
Castiel, however, was a bit weirded out by all of those flashy colors, music, and the surrounding feeling of euphoria... yet said nothing so far, as he hoped to be able to enjoy the evening with his friends.

Dean was absolutely overjoyed to be in Vegas, and he didn't hide that in the slightest. It seemed like an entire lifetime had passed since the last time he had gotten the chance to get in the City of Sin, loosen up a bit and think of nothing. Nothing beside gambling, drinking to his heart's content, getting drunk... He had already pushed both his brother and his friend all over the city, going from a casino to another, until they were back at the place they were staying at. Place where he got to drink some more and... well, flirt with the waitress that had gotten him his drinks to begin with.

"Sometimes I wonder why we even book a room for you," Sam sighed, rolling his eyes. He actually stood up from their table, after emptying his last drink. "Actually I think I'll hit the hay."

Dean sighed deeply. "Man, Vegas is totally wasted on you, you know." Then he saluted him with two fingers. "Night then Sam. Don't wait up. I have a feeling I won't come back tonight", he added with a wink, getting back to the giggling brunette waitress that was now sitting at his side, making a great show of trying to look attractive in her black, unbuttoned top.

Sam rolled his eyes, and went back to his room, after bidding them all a goodnight.
On a usual evening, Castiel would have taken his chance to leave as well. But on that evening, his jaw tensed, he was looking a lot at Dean and this waitress. When Sam left, he cleared his throat. "Dean. I wish to talk to you."

Dean rolled his eyes a bit, unseen, then turned to Castiel. "You want to talk? Right now?" He made a gesture as if to say 'Can't you see I have something going on, man'. But even in his inebriated state, he could tell his friend was tense as a coil that had been wound up too tight.

Castiel nodded. "Alone," he confirmed him, subtle as a rock splashing into water. He was actually so tense he was clenching his fists under the table, unconsciously running his thumb over his invisible thread.

Dean studied him a bit, squinting. Then sighed. He briefly turned to the waitress, "Well, sorry, uh... Janet - it's Janet, right? -, my very subtle, very delicate friend here needs to speak to me", then he got up. "I'll follow, go ahead."

Castiel instantly stood up too, and gestured for Dean to join him in a corridor, a bit further away. "What are you doing," he asked his friend, an irritated look on his face.

Dean blinked at him a few times. Then frowned slightly, looking honestly confused. "What are you talking about?", he asked, noting the irritation of Castiel's voice.

"I thought-" Castiel slightly bit his lower lip, as he looked away for a few seconds, taking a deep breath. Then he turned to face Dean once again. "I thought we'd talk about this," he lifted his fist, and showed the thread with his index, "before you'd have sex with anyone else." That came out wronger than expected, in fact.

Dean looked at the thread, then looked away. Oh, great. That. He would have loved to say he had forgotten, but hell, it was impossible to. Especially since Castiel was around. And the sudden pang of guilt he felt at that made him get instantly defensive. "You wanna talk? Well, alright. Let's talk about it then", he said, crossing his arms on his chest, ignoring the wording choice his friend had made.

Dean looked at him, clenching his jaw. "I thought we were friends, Cas. Hell, best friends, since we are at it. Now, do you think that should change? What does it mean for you, though, that's the question", he answered, promptly avoiding to actually answer. Because, honestly? He had no idea of what to answer to him.

Castiel was about to answer something, but he closed his mouth again, pressing his lips together, angrily, as he looked away. "Right. You were hoping for an astronaut." He took a step back, actually hesitating whether to hurry back to his room or not.

Dean could feel his fists clenching now, along with his teeth, his frown now a deep scowl. "Alright. Just to make a point. I'll have you know that one thing I sure as hell wasn't hoping for was for this to just happen and fuck things up with YOU, and to make things this awkward!" Maybe it was the alcohol spurring him on, but he was getting honestly angry. Why did Cas want to make things WEIRD? And why wasn't he speaking clearly?

Castiel's face was unreadable at that point. He stared at him for a few seconds, before talking in a low, oddly calm voice. "So I take you'd have been satisfied with just someone, anyone but me." He pressed his lips together, barely nodding, as he stepped back. He was wounded, and honestly mad at Dean for overreacting that way.

Dean pinched the bridge of his nose. "That's not what I said", he hissed out through his teeth. Even though, in some way, that was exactly what he had said. "Cas, this- honestly, I don't know at all how to feel about this. About... us. I just don't know." Words seemed to have some serious difficulty to come out.

"Will you ever think about it, Dean?" Castiel asked him, frowning slightly. "Because I don't think I can stick around knowing whenever you're-" He made a gesture towards the other room, where they had left the waitress.

"I..." Dean wetted his lips in a nervous gesture. "I need time, ok? You make it seem like it's easy, but... I can't just jump on this like it's no big deal", Dean muttered.

"I see," Castiel replied, swallowing hard. "I'll go, then. Leave you some space." He forced an awkward smile. "Goodnight, Dean." And on those words, he walked away from him.

"Goodnight, Cas." Dean felt a lump in his throat as he watched his friend walk away from him. Then he turned around, and left to get back to his room. Alone.
